When is the right time to have your child evaluated by an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child be evaluate by a certified orthodontist by the age of 7. Many general dentists wait until all baby teeth are gone and all permanent teeth are erupted before suggesting that a child be seen by an orthodontist. Unfortunately this can be a costly mistake.
Many jaw and tooth problems are not noticed until the child has a complete orthodontic evaluation, including 3D radiographic studies that most general dentists don’t have in their offices. Putting off orthodontic treatment may sometimes relegate the child to costly surgery or unnecessary procedures which is why the AAO so strongly recommends that every child be seen by the age of 7.
